1. Assuming the incumbent is unbeatable

They're usually just older. Check their backlinks, their content depth, their site speed and their reviews before you decide you can't win. Here's how.

2. Ignoring Rolleston, Rangiora and Kaiapoi

Growing fast, barely contested, and almost never named on a Christchurch business's website. It's the cheapest visibility in Canterbury and nobody is taking it.

3. A half-finished Google Business Profile

One category, no services listed, a photo from 2019. This is free to fix and it's the biggest local lever you have.

4. Never asking for reviews

They drive rankings and they drive the decision — especially in Merivale and Fendalton, where reputation beats price. Yet most businesses simply never ask.

5. Chasing the head term and nothing else

"Builder Christchurch" is contested by firms with a decade of links. "Bathroom renovation Merivale" is not — and that searcher is much closer to buying.

6. Thin, templated suburb pages

Twenty pages with the name swapped is a doorway pattern. Google treats it as spam. One real page per area beats twenty fake ones.

7. A slow site full of enormous photos

Construction and retail sites are the worst offenders. Every unoptimised image costs you rankings and conversions at once.

8. No tracking

If you can't say where last month's enquiries came from, you're allocating budget on feel.

9. Buying links or reviews

Both are penalisable. Fake reviews also breach the Fair Trading Act in New Zealand. The short-term gain isn't worth the long-term damage, and no legitimate agency will do it.
